The action of Apex Legends takes place in the titanfall universe. It features a new set of diverse characters, each with their own abilities and personalities. With tight controls, strategic shooting mechanics, and a very rich map to play on, Apex Legends conquered the gaming industry. Two years later, Apex Legends has had its ups and downs.
Legend and History
The events of Apex Legends take place years after Titanfall 2, when Frontier War ended. Some Legends, such as Bangalore, participated in the Frontier war, while others, such as Wraith, are not entirely clear. Regardless, the Titanfall universe looks different. Popular legends participate in Apex Legends games to become arena champions. During each season in Apex Legends, a new character is introduced, expanding the world and knowledge of the franchise. The characters have a deep history with the Apex Legends games, and each has their own goals and motivations. The Pathfinder Outlander story was recently released, giving us a glimpse into who Pathfinder is and what his purpose is. First, Rafe was given her own story that detailed how she got her abilities. Being just a multiplayer game, Apex Legends keeps fans of the series interested in the characters. Even while playing, a character may come across a certain area and talk about it with another character in the game. The story isn’t deep or touching, but it does a good job of making the player care about these characters and the world of Apex Legends.
Legends
At its core, Apex Legends is a battle royal. The idea is that every character you choose is different from every other character. This is what makes Apex Legends so appealing. Before entering a match, players choose which character they want to play. The character they choose cannot be chosen by another player, and sometimes it’s best to have a backup character in case someone picks the legends you play as the most. Each legendary has a set of abilities. A tactic that can be used more often, an ultimate that you need to charge before using, and a passive ability. Let’s say you’re playing as Bloodhound and you enter an area where there might be enemies. Simply activate the scan ability to see if there are enemies in the area and where they are. Using his passive ability can allow you to see traces of where the team was before you entered the area. Using Bloodhounds Ultimate allows him to go into berserk mode and his visibility will turn gray, he will move faster, and any enemies will light up red, making it easier to take shots. Using characters’ abilities, especially together, can allow for fights that feel different at times. While I think the abilities are great and really fit the characters’ personalities, Respawn generally likes to balance abilities around the Legends’ win rate. For example, not many people who play as Rampart win games, so Respawn may adjust their abilities in a future update and improve them. This is a bit controversial in the community, and I wonder if this will continue as more Legends are added to the game.
Gameplay
Gameplay is where Apex Legends shines the most, and it’s one of the reasons I’ve been playing it for almost 2 years. The movement in Apex is solid. Sliding and jumping is a great experience. Climbing walls and finding nifty ways to climb buildings is always fun, especially in Worlds Edge. While some legends move at a different speed than others, the game still maintains a tight control and feel.
The best part of Apex Legends is the firefighting. This is something I rarely say about any first-person shooter. Each weapon in Apex Legends is unique and requires a different skill level for each weapon. The R301 or Wingman require a different set of rules to interact with. One is more of a magnum that requires more accuracy, while the other is automatic and allows those satisfying laser shots to pierce the armor of enemy units. There are different types of ammunition that work with different weapons. The R99 uses light ammo, so you should prioritize finding light ammo when looting. You can only carry 2 weapons at a time, and this requires that you only carry what you need for your particular outfit.
